Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum

The Desert Museum teems with life. Exhibits re-create the natural landscape so realistically you find yourself eye-to-eye with mountain lions, prairie dogs, Gila monsters, hawks and hummingbirds. Millions of visitors from all over the world come to marvel at the museum's cutting-edge exhibits and its interpretation of hundreds of living animals and thousands of kinds of plants.

Two restaurants, a coffee bar and refreshment ramadas are on the grounds. Two gift shops offer souvenirs, natural history books and native crafts. The museum's gallery hosts exhibitions where artists interpret the Sonoran Desert in a variety of media.

The museum is primarily an outdoor experience, so wear a hat, sunscreen and comfortable shoes. The museum provides shade ramadas, drinking fountains and restrooms. Wheelchairs and strollers are also available free of charge.

To get there...

Take Speedway Boulevard west. It will seem like you are going to drive off of the face of the earth, but keep going. Turn right onto Kinney Road. In about 2 1/2 miles, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum will be on your left. There are signs along the way to help you. For those of you unfamiliar with the desert southwest, the drive will be an adventure. You will drive past, and through foothills covered with cacti. You will also drive by Gates Pass, a favorite site for watching sunsets and desert storms. Be careful, the road becomes quite narrow and winding.
