Convention on Biological Diversity's SBSTTA-27, Oct 20-24, and SB8J-1, Oct 27-30
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat invites media to apply for accreditation to two pivotal global meetings in Panama City:
- 27th meeting of the CBD's Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-27), 20–24 Oct., and
- 1st meeting of the CBD's new Subsidiary Body on Article 8(j) and Other Provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity Related to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, (SB8J-1), 27–30 Oct.
These meetings support efforts of Parties to the Convention to expedite implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), the world’s landmark 2022 agreement to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, including four goals for 2050 and 23 targets for 2030.
SBSTTA-27 will strengthen the scientific and technical backbone of GBF implementation, including:
- Review progress towards Framework achievement
- Biodiversity–climate interlinkages in support of GBF Targets 8 and 11, and a broad range of other targets (with recommendations to the 2025 UN Climate Change Conference (COP30, Brazil, 10-21 Nov).
- Biodiversity and health (GBF Section C), invasive alien species (GBF Target 6), agriculture, forests (GBF Targets 11 to 12).
- Taking up the latest IPBES global science-policy Assessment reports and their implications for the Convention's work, including GBF implementation.
SB8J-1 will focus on the vital role of indigenous peoples and local communities in implementing the Convention, its Protocols, and the Global Biodiversity Framework, addressing:
- Draft guidelines on indigenous and traditional territories to support protection and restoration practices led by indigenous peoples and local communities in line with GBF Targets 2 and 3, as well as guidelines on inclusion of traditional lands in spatial planning and impact assessments
- In-depth dialogue on resource mobilization and access to funding for indigenous peoples and local communities
- The modus operandi of this new Subsidiary Body
