The New York Times Local Investigations Fellowship hires local reporters for one year to pursue a significant investigative project in their community. Fellows get the full backing of the Times newsroom — editing, resources, and reach — while staying rooted in the region they cover. Applications open July 1, 2026. The Local Investigations Fellowship team is hosting a webinar on Thursday, May 21st, at 5:00 p.m. ET to answer questions about the program. The Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education is launching a pilot cohort to support journalism entrepreneurs as part of the California Propel Local News Initiative, an effort to strengthen the state’s multi-lingual media ecosystem, ensuring long-term sustainability of local public service journalism for underserved localities. The Fire Up Entrepreneur Program, as part of the Propel Initiative, will train up to 16 people representing eight news organizations in revenue, audience, product and community with a focus on ensuring sustainability. Water in Communications is a free online training series for journalists, water communicators and convenors focused on strengthening practical communication and reporting skills around water. The programme explores investigative techniques, storytelling approaches and ways to drive collective action through communication.

The Public Lands Collaborative Residency supports creative teams engaged in storytelling projects that have the potential to help re-imagine and shape the future of public lands in the United States. Apply by June 1. 

Eight fellows from a variety of disciplines (including visual art, writing, philosophy, ethics, performing arts, sound and multidisciplinary genres) will each complete a project that engages with the vital topic of migration — of birds, mammals, plants and/or people — across landscapes undergoing rapid change in the Pacific Northwest and Great Basin.

The New Voices Student Leaders Institute is a free, online program that helps high school student journalists improve leadership and organizing skills, develop leadership roles within the New Voices movement and identify the best strategies to expand student press freedom in their state or community. The Institute will run half-days on July 14-16 and July 21-23, with additional programming throughout the school year. Participants are selected through a competitive application process, and it's open to next year’s high school students from any state. The deadline to apply is May 20.
